| УThe bottom line is we want the legislation,Ф said William S. Robinson, the groupТs executive director. УBut we want to reserve the right to address this issue at some critical point because of the percentage of people of African descent who use mentholated products.ФSupporters of the tobacco legislation, including the Senate billТs sponsor, Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat, say the bill addresses the potential health risks of menthol by giving the F.D.A. the authority to remove cigarettes additives, including menthol, if they are proved harmful.Menthol is particularly controversial because public health authorities have worried about its health effects on African-Americans. Nearly 75 percent of black smokers use menthol brands, compared with only about one in four white smokers. That is why one former public health official says the legislationТs menthol exemption is a Уcave-in to the industry,Ф an opinion shared by some other public health advocates.УI think we can say definitively that menthol induces smoking in the African-American community and subsequently serves as a direct link to African-American death and disease,Ф said the former official, Robert G. Robinson, who retired two years ago as an associate director in the office of smoking and health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. | ||

| The principal areas of concern at that time were: 1) Albanian Organized Crime Groups; 2) Links between Drug Trafficking and Terrorism in Central Asia; 3) Strategic Alliances and International Activities of Eastern-European Organized Crime; 4) The Colombian Nexus; 5) Russian and Israeli organized crime. One surprising area of criminal activity the Interpol identifies surrounds Cigarette Prohibition. Who knew? The Interpol report said:Why are marlboro cigarettes such an attractive commodity for organized crime groups? First, the difference between the duty-free and duty-paid prices are substantial, thereby allowing smugglers to make profits at relatively low street prices. Second, they are very easy to handle and transport. For example, a container load of cigarettes carries a potential tax value of $1.2 million, almost all of which is potential profit for the smuggler. Third, cigarette smuggling requires a willing market and a good local distribution network, which have already been established by drug-trafficking organizations. | ||

| Yesterday the NYT reported that a big time 2006 study on the early detection of lung cancer was funded in part by the Ligget Group, manufacturers of such fine cigarette brands as Pyramid (ФThe Peak of Value!Ф), Quest (ФReal smoking enjoyment!Ф) and Grand Prix (The Price Winner!Ф). Now, anti-cancer activists are screaming УfoulФ with the full force of their pristine, pink, tar-free lungs whilst running a marathon and tying ribbons all over everything.HereТs a question I would ask: Ligget sponsoring a cancer study is somehow a bad thing? If we give buy cigarettes companies the right to cause cancer, shouldnТt we also allow them to help prevent it? Why should the fact that tobacco companies make their profits peddling sickness and death to poor people preclude their doing any good in this crazy world of ours?ЕItТs like, once you become a symbol of distilled evil you canТt do anything for anybody without people doubting your motives! If Hitler had offered to donate $150,000 to his local food bank donТt you think they would have accepted his kindness with a warm УDanke?Ф They certainly would have, if they knew what was good for them. | ||

| Every year, smoking-related fires kill between 700 and 900 Americans and cause billions of dollars of property damage. One-quarter of those killed did not start the fire themselves, and smoking-related fires disproportionately affect the elderly and disabled. Fire-safe Cigarettes Online reduce the risk of cigarettes fires by placing bands of less-porous paper at certain points along the cigarette, causing the cigarette to self-extinguish when left unattended. After Congress failed to pass any laws requiring fire-safe cigarettes, fire safety advocates began to work at the state level where the campaign gained momentum. In 2004, New York saw an immediate decrease in deaths from smoking-related fires after enacting the nation’s first law requiring that only fire-safe cigarettes be sold in the state. Twenty other states have now passed similar laws, fifteen of them in the past year. The bills have been passed in every region of the country, including some tobacco growing states, and receive bipartisan support. For more information, see CPA’s Fire-Safe Cigarettes policy brief and model legislation and the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes. | ||

| "Indie Rock Universe" fell amid several pages of advertisements for camel cigarettes online' "The Farm" campaign. The Farm's tagline? "Committed to Supporting & Promoting Independent Record Labels". Coincidence? Rolling Stone would have you think so, according to a New York Times report linked via The Daily Swarm. Publisher Ray Chelstowski, quoted in the NY Times piece, claims Camel's parent company R.J. Reynolds Tobacco "had no idea [the Indie Rock Universe piece] would take a cartoon format." Likewise, "the editors don't see the advertising." | ||

| That leads us to an excellent report that the Daily Swarm filed yesterday. camel, the friendly folks behind Joe Camel, apparently wants to get onboard the indie bandwagon. The Swarm had previously detailed Camel's rather visible sponsorship of recent gigs by Dinosaur Jr. and the Flaming Lips. Ostensibly, these events were intended to "reward loyal Camel smokers," but tickets also found their way to the general public. Based off of the Swarm's sources, these shows were essentially all-Camel festivals, with ample logo placement, free cancer sticks for attendees and tour buses repurposed as smoking lounges. | ||

| In the US Outwit the West is an annual promotional competition first run in 2004. It is a targeted campaign to selected adults on the marlboro miles mailing list. The 20 teams who submit the largest number of correct answers by the deadline (December 18, 2006 for Outwit the West 3) win a trip to the Marlboro Ranch. Once at the ranch, the top group is revealed and awarded the $1,000,000 prize. The campaign aims to build a brand community. | ||

| Patrick Canavan, the CEO of St. Elizabeth's, announced the policy and said that while some of the staff welcomed the change, many feared what would happen. For decades, Marlboro Miles have been used to control patient behavior at the hospital. If a patient acted out, cigarette privileges were denied. If they calmed down, they would get a smoke."[The staff] said, 'You know we're going to have more instances of aggressive behavior. We're not going to be able to help people calm themselves down,'" Canavan says. "And that is a real worry. You know, 15 minutes out of every hour was dedicated to smoke marlboro."But it was more than that. Canavan says some of his staff argued that it just wasn't fair to the patients to take their buy marlboro away.marlboro | ||
