January 28, 2006 - US psyops fighting the Net
A document released on Thursday under a freedom of informationrequest confirms what many of us had already come to realise -that American military psyops are active and 'fighting' the Net.The US Department of Defense's Information Operations Roadmap is concerned with their theory of 'Full Spectrum Dominance' whereby the Americans control everything, even in 'peacetime'.From the documents conclusions;"We Must Fight the Net. DoD is building an information-centricforce. Networks are increasingly the operational center of gravity, and the Department must be prepared to "fight the net." [obscuredsection approx 8 words] but be fully prepared to ensure criticalwarfighting network functionality and to [obscured section approx10 words]."Tranlation / Analysis: "Fight the Net" suggests that DoD considerthat "the Net" is their enemy. Notice that it's not fight on the net,it's "Fight the Net". Shame it's obscured."We must Improve Network and Electro-Magnetic Attack Capability. Toprevail in an information-centric fight, it is increasingly importantthat our forces dominate the electromagnetic spectrum with attackcapabilities."Translation: Must have the best attack tools available to ensuredominance. Electromagnetic-spectrum probably relates to all formsof electronic communication e.g. television, radio, the 'Net'and computer networks, mobile phones, fax machines, answeringmachines, etc. May include herf guns which - it is claimed - frazzleeverything electronic with a huge pulse of energy. Do they actuallyexist? Very likely to include tools like as yet unrecognised wormsand viruses, hacking tools, even programmed backdoors given thecorporate nature of the US state, etc.On 'The Foundation For Building a Core Military Competency';"The Department's concept of IO ['Information Operations'] shouldemphasize full spectrum IO that makes a potent contribution toeffect based operations across the full range of military operationsduring peace, crisis and war. The concept includes three integratedIO functions of overriding importance:- Deter, discourage, dissuade and direct ad adversary, therebydisrupting his unity of command and purpose while preserving our own.- Protect our plans and misdirect theirs, thereby allowing ourforces to mass their effects to maximum advantage while the adversaryexpends his resources to little effect.- Control adversarial communications and networks and protect ours, thereby crippling the enemy's ability to direct an organised defensewhile preserving effective command and control of our forces. By extension, when executed to maximum effect, seizing control of adversary communications and networks will allow Combatant Comanders to control the enemy's network and communications-dependeent weapons, infrastructure, command and control and battlespace management functions."What's this all about? The corporate press has been concentrating on the Yanks' problemthat psyops bullshit intended for non-US audiences is reaching aUS audience and that this should not happen. This is all about controlling peoples' perceptions and behaviourthrough deception and underhand tactics. It appears yet again thatthe US has declared war on the rest of the World. What to do? Advice for political activists and dissidentsCompetent net users have been aware of, and noticed this. I suggestthat activists should rise to the challenge, become competent inusing the Net and protect yourselves. An easy way to take somebody off the net is to disable their computerthrough a brown-out. A brown-out is a sudden drop in voltage likeyou have during thunder storms. This can be done very simply locallyand I have suspicions that this occurs in UK. Protect your machinewith a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), a surge protector (cheap)or use a laptop so that the battery cuts in.A very useful resource is a Linux livecd. A livecd is an operating system on a cd. Knoppix is a comprehensive livecd (or DvD) and the Knoppix distribution has been extended by others for specialised purposes e.g. encryption, security. There may be one for exactly what you need. An advantage of a Linux livecd is that it leaves the underlying computer system undisturbed. Linux livecds are also free. Download an iso CD image, burn to a CD and boot.A packet sniffer is very useful and informative. Watching everypacket that travels your machine or network will provide real insight into what's going on. Ethereal is a good packet sniffer. It's not really important to understand everything if you'renot familiar with TCP/IP. Just have it running so that you can seehow the network operates normally and when things go wrong. Watchit every now and again, you will learn. For the more technically capable. It looks as if ICMP redirects are used to deny services and multiple duplicate ACKs are used for another purpose. There are also websites and blogs that are ocasionally blocked or approachable only from certain links. (e.g. hello bd) Overcome obstructions. Do some web research about privacy and anonymity. Check out Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Handbook for bloggers and cyber-dissidents.Carry on blogging.Comments have been disabled due to malicious commentingThe following comments were made to this post January 29, 2006 - Security and anon is importantPosted by dizzy Security and anon is important and should perhaps be treated more seriously. I am aware of three linux or BSD based livecds that provide anon out of the box, one of which is quite restricted and old. Once you are familiar with it, any linux livecd can do it with a few minutes work. When downloading a livecd, check that the site is genuine e.g. by doing a web-based nslookup and using that ip address to access the site. Check the md5sum of the downloaded .iso so that you can trust it. Harden the box, scan for open ports, configure a firewall, run an intrusion detection system, read the logs. I've caught scans my box by watching Ethereal. I suspect that 'they' also use DNS cache poisoning although it almost seems that they can intercept and rewrite DNS responses on the fly. Permanent Link
