THE
FILM THEY TRIED TO BAN!
Smash EDO will be touring with the new feature
length campaign film 'On
the Verge'. We are planning to travel as widely as possible to independent
cinemas, social centres and community centres and talk to campaigning groups around
the UK. The tour will be a chance to show 'On
the Verge' but also to talk about how our campaign is progressing and how
people in other communites can support us. Please email smashedo@hotmail.com to
book a screening and speaker.
In 2004 a group of Brighton peace campaigners began
to bang pot and pans outside their local arms manufacturers EDO MBM in disgust
of their part in the Iraq war. This has grown into the Smash EDO campaign, which
has cost the company millions, been the subject of large scale police operations
and has tested the right to protest in the UK.
Using activist, police and
CCTV footage plus interviews with those involved in the campaign, 'On The Verge'
tells the story of one of the most persistent and imaginative campaigns to emerge
out of the UK's anti-war movement and direct action scene.

First
Showing of 'On the Verge' at the Duke of York's Cinema 6.30pm,
Duke of York's Cinema - First Screening of 'On
the Verge' - the Smash EDO Campaign film plus a selection of short films about
occupation and resistance in Palestine.
One
hour before the premiere screening of the film the campaign was contacted and
told that one of the oldest cinemas in the country had been threatened with losing
their license if they showed "Smash EDO the movie". Sussex police had
leaned on the council, who had then leaned on the cinema forcing a withdrawal
of the screening. An impromptu demo formed outside the cinema as people ran a
stall and used megaphones to redirect the people to a pub down the road where
140 people (some of whom came off the street when they heard the police were trying
to censor their viewing) watched the film in two showings. It was a very successful
night, no matter that Sussex police tried their best to ruin it.
